The Murder of Hrant Dink: A Turkish Court Denies a Wider Conspiracy

The journalist Hrant Dink was no stranger to sinister e-mails and anonymous death threats. Turkish of Armenian descent, he was a well-known and outspoken advocate for peace between the two bitterly estranged nations. That won him few friends among rabid Turkish nationalists who hated Dink because he openly said the killings of hundreds of thousands of Armenians in the early 20th century was genocide — a term Turkey rejects. (The Nobel prize–winning novelist Orhan Pamuk also earned their wrath for similar comments calling on Turkey to address its past. He took refuge in New York City.)

But things rapidly got worse for Dink in January 2007. Sentenced by a court for “insulting Turkishness,” he was vilified by mainstream newspapers and called in to a meeting at the Istanbul governor’s office to be warned that he had gone too far. “I am now a target,” he wrote. “My soul,” he wrote shortly after the meeting, “has the skittishness of a dove … a bit frightened, but free.”

The day those words were published, Dink was gunned down outside his newspaper’s office, shot in the head three times by Ogun Samast, then 17, who was later apprehended in Trabzon, a city on the Black Sea coast, where patriotism and machismo run high. Leaked pictures showed police and army officers apparently giving the young man a hero’s welcome: they posed, smiling, against the backdrop of a Turkish flag.

Let’s be realistic now. 

Armenians are almost approaching the end in their genocide claims. They have made the world accept their claims by working continuously like industrious ants for 100 years. While they were explaining their pain and what they had to live through, we did not even discuss among ourselves what had happened. We buried our heads in the sand and have reached these days. ISTANBUL // Cracks have appeared between Turkey’s ruling party and the movement of an Islamic preacher that has been an influential supporter of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the prime minister.

The movement led by Fethullah Gulen, a 70-year-old preacher who lives in the United States, has been a key supporter of the Erdogan government, which is led by pious Muslims and has roots in political Islam. Some critics say the Gulencis, as the supporters of Mr Gulen are called in Turkey, have gained vast influence over state institutions.

But several decisions by Mr Erdogan have put off the Gulencis, as differences of interests between themselves and Mr Erdogan, a seasoned politician and party leader who always has an eye on the next elections, become apparent.

Turkey courts Saudi Arabia for more trade and investment

Turkey hopes to tame its chronic current account deficit (CAD) problem by attracting sizable Saudi investments in key industries that contribute most to the widening CAD, Economy Minister Zafer Çağlayan has said, while the government eyes a bigger slice in huge multi-billion dollar Saudi infrastructure and construction projects.

“We are looking for Saudi experience and investment in refining, petrochemical and energy development to curtail our CAD figures,” he said, adding that he was very encouraged with high-level meetings he held in both Jeddah and Riyadh as part of his trade mission trip.
